ESSENCE Magazine Selects Tina Wells, Buzz Marketing CEO, As One Of The Top 40 Women In Business Under 40
October 1, 2004 – Tina Wells, CEO of
Buzz Marketing Group, a marketing consulting firm that helps clients connect,
understand and impact their target market, is one of ESSENCE's 40 Top
Women in Business under 40. ESSENCE, the leading lifestyle magazine for
today's African-American woman, recognized Wells for her motivation, entrepreneurial
spirit and career success at such a young age.
A self-described Starbucks addict, Wells, 24, began writing product reviews
for The New Girl Times, a NY-based newspaper for young girls at 16. Realizing
the disconnect between teens' desires and companies' misdirected outreach,
Tina submitted her reviews and suggestions directly to the companies and
was amazed by their overwhelmingly positive response. As a result, she
launched Buzz Marketing Group in 1996, a full-service marketing agency
dedicated to helping clients better connect with youth, all before earning
her B.A. in Communications Arts and graduating with honors from Hood College
in May of 2002.
Wells has received recognition on research projects such as the "What's
Your Anti-Drug?" campaign, Miller's "Not A Drop" campaign, and Verizon
Wireless's FREEUP launch. Her staple clients include Candie's shoes, Bear
Stearns, and ESSENCE Communications. Along with a network of teen consultants
called "buzzSpotters," Buzz MG offers marketing expertise in beauty, entertainment,
fashion and lifestyle marketing.
Wells shares, "My favorite part about Buzz is talking to youth all day
long, and representing their opinions as honestly as I can to my clients.
Being able to predict trends, solve problems for clients and traveling
is what I enjoy most. I also love having the opportunity to inspire other
young people and providing a cool work environment for them where they
can be creative and reach their personal goals."
In addition to leading one of the most innovative youth marketing companies
in the world, Wells regularly speaks to various professional audiences
across the country. Most recently, she participated in Essence's first
annual "Women Who Are Shaping the World Leadership Summit" in New York
City, Women Trailblazers Conference in Las Vegas and she has been asked
to speak at an internal meeting on Youth Trends in 2005 at Nickelodeon.
Tina has also appeared in NV, Entrepreneur, CosmoGIRL!, BRANDWEEK, Savoy,
Le Nouvel Observateur, and Link, the cover of Brass and had been quoted
in numerous news and trade publications, including The New York Times,
WWD and USA Today.
Presently, Wells is a contributing editor for both Retail Merchandiser
and Essence. She is also working on a manuscript for her first book, a
user-friendly guide to "buzz marketing."
