Almost Famous: Aderbat
Visit Aderbat.com Aderbat, named after a vintage flying machine, produces music with a new jazz feel that touches your soul and that you can’t seem to get enough of. The first thing that strikes you about Aderbat is lead singer Matt Taylor’s smoky, impressionistic voice (and the fact that he is a dead ringer for Napoleon Dynamite). And then there’s his conscious, sensitive lyrics. His three hipster bandmates—Chris, Todd and Brad—seamlessly compliment “the voice” on lead guitar, trumpet, drums and bass live and on Rabbits and Rocks, their self-released debut album. To discover them on your own, check out their site. You won't be disappointed.
Starting the Day
It all starts at 7 am. Coffee. Day job. Cell phone rings periodically to bring me out of the hum of ideas spinning a web in my head–‘How can I add that keyboard line from the record into the live show?’…When the phone does ring, it’s usually Todd, the drummer. We discuss how we’re possibly going to get that keyboard line from the record into the live show. Matt will know. Phone calls from management–“We got a call from the people with Joan of Arcadia today. They want to use our song ‘Bye Bye’ in an episode.” One more thing to keep our spirits up until the record labels start calling.

Someday soon. Soon…
mySpace Time!
Myspace.com—I could spend all day every day on Myspace. It’s addicting. It’s an online space for people to meet and find indie bands. Time to add new photos of the band. Update the show dates…then respond to emails.
Emails
Chat with the managers about booking shows. Oh! And I can’t forget the Aderbat website… check those emails too… call my best friend from college, who happens to be a pro web designer. “Let’s set up a meeting to talk about updates for the site. We want to add a video game. It’s catapults throwing rocks at rabbits… what?… We’ll talk about it at the meeting.” Ok.
Networking
Phone call from a photographer… Creds include a young Coldplay and Guided By Voices, among others, and wants to shoot us… for FREE. A true fan!

Not done with plotting to ‘Make It’ just yet. Time to burn some more CD’s with two of our songs from the debut album, screenprint the covers, and then find a good show to hit in Philly where we can hand these out for free. Do we have any more t-shirts left?

…More screenprinting—D.I.Y. style!

Cell phone beeps. Text message received – ‘Heard you guys on the radio today!’ Really?!?
Practice
My bass – It finds its way into my hands 6 out of 7 days in the week. I’m still not THAT good. Just learning to play with a pick. As for my days as an artist, aside from album covers, that will have to wait until I retire from the rock star life… (ha ha). Check ProTools on the laptop to see if Matt has any new stuff in the works. Yes! A new song – perfect. I hear a bass line. Record a rough track. Thursdays and Sundays are rehearsals. Shows are usually on weekends – setting up tours for the spring. But today is Friday. I’m going to see Bright Eyes …with a box full of free Aderbat samplers to hand out after the show. (wink)
