These rockers have been around for several years now, and the release of their newest album, Because of the Times shows they’ve really managed to perfect their garage-rock sound. José González’s trademark acoustic guitar songs ring all the way from Sweden. This 29-year-old crooner is known for his acoustic covers of the electro-techno song “Heartbeats,” originally by The Knife (another Swedish indie fave), Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA,” and Kylie Minogue’s “Hand on Your Heart.” José has already played on Conan O’Brien, and one of his songs appeared on an episode of The O.C..

When it comes to modern jazz and soul, no one does it like Amy Winehouse. This 23-year-old first debuted her single “Stronger than Me” in 2004, and she was recently awarded Best British Female Artist for her second album, Back to Black. Amy grew up in a family with a history of jazz, and carries on the family tradition with her own unique style.

Most sixteen year olds are preoccupied with going to school, surfing online, and learning to drive. Sean Kingston, on the other hand, is already signed to Epic Records. This young rapper started his career by doing talent shows throughout his community in South Florida. After he started incorporating his Reggae roots into his music, he was discovered by producer J.R. Rotem, who subsequently signed him. Sean feels that despite his age, he has been through a lot in his life, and his music will only make him stronger.

At just 21 years of age, Lily Allen has not just won over the heart of the UK, but has also made her mark in the US. This vintage-punk glamour girl grew up listening to punk, ska, and reggae, and you can clearly hear those elements in her music. Her songs are about love, but they are not the conventional love songs you might be used to hearing. “Smile” is a post-breakup ballad with the lyrics “At first when I see you cry, / It makes me smile.” Lily has already performed on Saturday Night Live this year, and I’m sure we will be seeing more of her soon!

Joshua Radin is an emerging acoustic-alternative artist from Cleveland, Ohio. Joshua got his big break with the help of close friend and Scrubs actor Zach Braff, when his song “Winter” landed on an episode of Scrubs. Soon afterwards, more of Joshua’s music was featured in North Shore and Grey’s Anatomy. Joshua’s songs contain elements of folk and are reminiscent of artists like Simon & Garfunkel and Iron & Wine.

Lil’ Mama started rapping between the ages of ten and twelve, and fell in love with the element of poetry in her music. Her current single is called “Lip Gloss,” and she will be releasing her debut album, Voice of the Young People, later this year.

You may know him only as the third place finalist from the fifth season of American Idol, but newcomer Elliott Yamin has been doing remarkably well since the release of his new album on March 20th, 2007. The self-titled album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 96,000 copies in just one week, making it the second highest-ever album debut for an independent artist.
